Essex County

British brother trio known for its fusion of gritty vocals - based in the UK

British brother trio Essex County is known for its fusion of gritty, masculine vocals, pristine family harmony, and irreverent guitar.

The exclusive mix earned the “So Good” singers millions of streams, a spot atop multiple Spotify playlists, and invitations to perform at some of country music’s most prestigious venues and festivals, including Ryman Auditorium, Bluebird Café and headlining BMI’s Key West Songwriter’s Festival.

The men – Nate Bass, Mark Bass and Kieran Bass – have been performing together since they were children. Their path to Nashville started at London’s Wembley Stadium six months after the brothers began music lessons - Mark, 10, (guitar) Kieran, 8, (bass), Nate, 12, (drums). The brothers' proud parents, Dave and Diane Bass, along with Nate and Kieran, watched from the audience in the stadium as middle brother Mark was named U.K. Guitarist of the Year by a panel of celebrity judges.

The following year, the brothers were playing an instrumental set of Joe Satriani covers in a London music store when a music executive approached the children and asked if they could sing. They thought singing “was for girls” but decided to try at the executive’s urging. The family vocal blend sounded like money to the man, and the Bass brothers formed a group they called Next of Kin. The teenagers signed their first record deal, charted their first hit, “24 Hours From You,” and toured Europe with some of the world’s most-known pop stars. While they were singing pop songs in the spotlight, their parents immersed the siblings in The Eagles, Restless Heart and Hal Ketchum. They started writing songs with their mom and performed their original “Can’t Find Me” on “The X Factor” U.K., where they were finalists before coming to Nashville to pursue a career in country music.

The men have written songs and recorded with some of the most prestigious names in Nashville, including Victoria Shaw, Kent Blazy, Dann Huff, Steve Dorff, Desmond Child and Ron Fair.

“We’ve written with all the (songwriters) Mum played for us in the car,” Kieran said. “To be writing with them is surreal.”

In 2020, Essex County released their debut country single, “So Good,” which accumulated nearly 2 million streams and soared to the top of Spotify’s prestigious New Boots playlist. The song’s video stayed in the Top 10 on CMT for months. Propelled by that success, their EP, also called “So Good,” is the first and only video EP to debut on CMT. Later that year, their Christmas song “Last Christmas” was No. 1 on Spotify’s Country Christmas playlist for the entire holiday season.

“We’re hoping they’re the biggest country act to ever come from the United Kingdom,” said Fair, the band’s Grammy-winning producer Ron Fair, who has produced albums that have sold more than 100 million copies. “Mark is a savant of the guitar. Kieran is lockstep in all the harmony parts and a super consistent singer with fantastic tone. And Nate has this vintage tone that’s old school but new school. It’s elegant, but it’s very masculine and satisfying. In the studio, we can use it as a weapon.”

Essex County released their follow-up, self-titled EP in the fall of 2022 while they were in England to play multiple sold-out theater shows and festivals.

“It’s been a very long journey to Nashville,” Nate added. “Through perseverance and the love of music, we just kept going. This whole community, the songwriters, just everyone who is playing music kind of lifts you. This just feels right. It feels amazing.”

With 2023 brimming with exciting opportunities, the men will make history as country music’s first British Invasion.

“It means a new chapter in our lives to be here now,” Mark said. “This place here suits us down to the ground.
